As part of epiSTEME 4 conference, the following popular talks have been arranged:

Feminist Science Studies -- Helen Longino, Stanford University, USA

Feminist science studies in the West emerged initially from three concerns:  the paucity of women in scientific fields, the persistent use of putative biological considerations to justify gender inequality, and the lack of attention to women’s issues in health and social sciences research.  It soon became clear to some feminist scholars that a deeper analysis of the structure of scientific knowledge and of scientific institutions was required to make progress in developing scientific research that was inclusive of, rather than inimical to, women’s interests.  This talk will cover give an overview of the emergence of feminist science studies in the West in the last 25 years, with attention to the different models of knowledge these studies draw on, the different impacts of feminist analysis in the various fields of science, and the different kinds of challenges to feminist intervention posed by the different scientific disciplines.

About the Speaker:

Philosophically, Longino is an advocate of a strong form of social epistemology that she calls Critical Contextual Empiricism. She has developed facets of her view in essays in philosophy of science and feminist philosophy journals and anthologies.

Longino's more recent book The Fate of Knowledge (2002) explored the critique of science and philosophy of science from sociology of science.
